MUST READS

As a person in publishing, reading books other than the ones I work on is almost as important as client work. It's my job to know what books are hot, what readers are gravitating to, etc, etc.

Some of the books I'm dying to read...

The Marbury Lens by Andrew Smith (have you seen the trailer?--I *still* have chills...see below) This is probably the PERFECT book to read in fall as it comes out just after Halloween--eeeek!

Plain Kate by Erin Bow (just picked this one up)

The Clockwork Three by Matthew Kirby

...among a few. But I'm always looking for suggestions! So please, fellow readers--what is on your MUST READ list for the fall??

I just picked up Gail Carriger's "Blameless" (book three in the Parasol Protectorate).

I just picked up two yesterday: RETURN TO PARADISE by one of my favorite YA romance writers, Simone Elkeles, and CLOCKWORK ANGEL by Cassandra Clare. So excited about these!!

And...that book trailer really freaked me out. Creepy.

I'm not usually a fan of book trialers, but dood!

Confused by the last bit. He's a children's author? So is the Marbury Lens a YA book? It didn't sound or look like it up until that point.

I wish I knew how to nail down, exactly, what YA is, Joseph. But no, I am definitely not a children's author.

Is The Marbury Lens YA? I don't know... The main characters are young, if that's the defining feature of YA. *shrugs*

Joanna -- THANK YOU very much for the mention!

Cheers,

Andrew Smith

Thanks for explaining, Andrew!

I can say, from a marketing standpoint that this is being sold as a Young Adult. But I think we can all agree that Young Adult today isn't what it was 20 years ago or even 5 years ago. A LOT of these books cross over now, and there was a recent article in the New York Times about how adult are turning more and more to the Young Adult genre.

A good blog post might be on reasons WHY this shift is happening....

Either way, it just looks like an awesome book!

Hopefully, someone over on Fifth Ave. will see this and send an ARC to you, so you don't have to wait until November to read it.

Olive's Ocean by Kevin Henkes

Matched by Ally Condie

The Last Best Days of Hamburger Halpin by Josh Berk

Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie by Jordan Sonnenblick

Reasons: All come highly recommended by readers/writers who've never steered me wrong, and for Josh Berk's book, it's because he seemed nice on WriteOnCon.

After that trailer, The Marbury Lens is on my list, for sure! My heart's racing.
The one book I'm yearning for won't be released until January--Beth Revis' Across the Universe. I read the opening chapter and was blown into the next universe.

Joanna, thanks for the support for THE MARBURY LENS. Surely one of the most intense books I've ever read, in any format.

I just bought The Clockwork Three at my school's Scholastic bookfair this evening. When I clicked on the Amazon link, it said it the book was not released...but there it was, sitting on the shelf.

If you want to read it when I'm done, I'll send it.
