Now that I work in publishing, I look past the covers a little bit more than I used to. I pick up books I wouldn't have picked up before. I spend more time reading the backs and the first pages than ever. I know how many different factors are taken into account when designing a cover and why those factors sometimes don't align with my personal taste. So as someone in "the know," I try not to let covers cloud my judgement of a title.
But still...
A good cover can always suck me in.

I'm reading Imaginary Girls now and WOW...this writing is *gorgeous*. I hope to snag a copy of Bunheads as soon as ARCs are available. And then I'll let you guys know what I think.
Because the only thing that catches my attention more than covers is a personal recommendation.
How about you guys? What makes you pick up a book?

I'm attracted to shiny things, so gorgeous covers are a sure way to make me give a book a look. However, nothing grabs my attention more than a compelling summary -- I'm excited for Marie Lu's LEGEND purely because of the summary.
I admit I still look at the pretty covered books before the others. It's a hard habit to break. But I know that doesn't always mean that the inside is just as gorgeous. I looked at a book once with a pretty cheap looking cover, not done well at all and inside the writing was fabulous.
These books look interesting. I would have never guessed that the BUNHEAD one was Paranormal. How fun. And what a funny title =)
SO PRETTY *pets*
I like nice covers, but they don't persuade me to buy a book. I remember I bought "The Hunger Games" after it came out, without any recommendation, and that cover is pretty ugly.
Kathryn--Bunheads is actually not paranormal, and it sounds pretty fabulous. I can't wait to read!
These are gorgeous. I'd look if I saw them in the store. Good blurbs and good writing would make me buy.
I'm learning how important cover art is, and how targeted. Ever notice that every chick-lit cover is pastel, with at least one handbag and one high-heel?
Beautiful covers! Like the rest, I'm attracted to a pretty cover. I so hope all us newbies get a nice, shiny cover when we're finally published!
I am soooo drawn to covers. And I do judge books by them! It's like the first impression--you never get a second chance to make a first impression.
Dying to read Bunheads!

SUPER weird, but I just found the photographer for IMAGINARY GIRLS: elenakalisphoto.com
So gorgeous!
Yup, yup...it's the cover art. I think all cover artists need a round of applause.
Just had this talk with my book club kids and yes yes the cover is really important. But, I did demo for them a book that doesn't have a super grab cover. I told one of the girls to read the back--needless to say there was an I want that "fight", lol. But yes, covers are so so important.
The words--first the title, then the first page. I'll admit, I love seeing book club picks at my local bookstore. I'll spend more time in that section than any other.
